WHY YOGA TAPE ?

Yoga is becoming popular all around the world. Many people of all ages around the world are taking up Yoga for health and wellness to keep mind and body fit. Certain Yoga postures require extreme bending and twisting of muscles and joints. If performed incorrectly, it may lead to various stresses, strains and injuries to muscles and ligaments. There are increasing numbers of reported and unreported injuries due to improper yoga posture techniques. Types of injuries a Yoga practitioner may sustain, include:

Sprain: is a stretch and/or tear of a ligament, a strong band of connective tissue that connect the end of one bone with another. There are different grades of strains. Most vulnerable parts are ankle, knee and wrists.

Strain: is an injury to muscle or tendon. Tendons are fibrous cords that attaches bones to muscles. Strain can be as simple as minor stretch, and it can be as severe as complete tear of muscle or tendon

INJURIES AND YOGA TAPE

Apart for seeking medical help, Yoga practitioners regularly use generic sports stretch tapes for pain relief and swelling. These sports tapes are not specifically made for Yoga injuries or injury prevention needs of yoga practitioners. Yoga postures may require extreme loads and stretch on soft tissues such as muscles, ligaments, tendons and fascia. After extensive research, Yoga tape was developed to meet the needs of yoga practitioners.  Yoga tape’s adjusted stretch ability to match yoga postures supports muscles and ligament without restricting Yoga movements.

HOW YOGA TAPE WORKS?

n most conditions, Yoga Tape is stretched before it’s applied to the skin surface. After application, it contracts to lift up the skin. That Increases blood circulation to applied body part. Increased circulation, removes waste products from that area, which in turns reduces pain and swelling. A different application technique also helps in activation of muscle to be used for a particular Yoga posture.

BENEFITS OF YOGA TAPE

Yoga tape has many benefits

1. Relief of pain and swelling – natural way of reduction in pain and swelling.

2. Prevention of overstretch injuries – when applied before performing a posture, yoga tape creates awareness of the movement in brain called proprioception. The tape alters muscle recruitment pattern through increased proprioception which helps in prevention of injuries

3. Muscle activation – Application of Yoga tape reminds the user which muscle group to focus and engage on to safely execute a posture. It alters the way muscle fibers fire to help correct alignment and provides muscle activities

1. Prepare Skin: Skin should be dry and free of oil, sweat and lotion. Preferably shave body hair for better adhesion and comfort

2. Cut Tape: Cut tape to desired length. Take note that Yoga Tape is more stretchable than other tapes and may almost double its original length.

3. Trim the corners of both ends of Yoga Tape to achieve a round end, this will ensure better adhesion of Yoga Tape on the skin.

4. Tear and peel off the paper backing of Yoga Tape

5. While applying Yoga Tape over or across a joint, bend/flex the limb at least 50% before application, to prevent overstretch of Yoga Tape during yoga postures. For specific Yoga Tape applications, please read the following for further instructions.

6. Apply the end of tape onto the skin without any stretch, this end should contact more than 5cm of the skin before the stretch can start.

7. Applying pressure on the anchoring end, elicit the stretch on Yoga Tape and tape the desired direction.

8. Be sure to leave at least 5-10cm of the end of the tape un-stretched to terminate the application.

9. Check that Yoga Tape is applied without creases and the tape is completely in contact with the skin.
